Second Chance Summer by Morgan Matson
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Another great book from Morgan Matson. I find that I can really relate to the characters that Morgan writes about, their voices are real to me and the settings are all so lifelike in the descriptions that I just find myself being there as part of the story. I really did like Taylor although there were a few moments when I felt like grabbing her and telling her that it wasn’t all about her. Not that she was always just thinking about herself but more that she wasn’t taking into account how other people might feel about her, and also, I don’t think she was giving other people enough credit. After finding out that her father has stage 4 pancreatic cancer Taylor’s family decide to go and spend the summer at their lake house. It is made quite clear that ‘something’ happened when Taylor was 12 and this ‘something’ had to do with her best friend Lucy, and her first boyfriend Henry. Although we don’t find out what the ‘something’ was until half way through the story.
All in all, I liked this story. I enjoyed all of the characters and also enjoyed watching Taylor’s relationships with different characters – Henry, Lucy, her sister Gelsey and especially her relationship with her father. I also knew from the start that I would probably end up crying – and cry I did. I read the book in 4 hours as it was so easy to read and I didn’t realise how the time was flying by which I always think is a good sign.
