Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
I finished this book a week ago and in that time, I haven’t had any desire to pick up another book to start reading….because I really loved ‘Throne of Glass’ so much. I started reading it and from the first four pages, I was hooked. I was introduced to Celaena, an 18 year old girl who is also a trained assassin and who is serving a life sentence in the salt mines and instantly I was , ‘well I just love this girl’. She was sassy, smart, bold and had attitude and this was all while she was in chains!! Reading the blurb of the book gave me a good idea what the story was about and it sounded good but the characters, their dialogue and the setting was what made it great for me. I did make it 1/4 through the book before finding out that there were also 4 novellas that ‘really should be read before reading Throne of Glass’ and so I put it down and read each of these and I must agree, they gave me so much more background and I enjoyed Throne of Glass so much more. As I said Celaena is smart and bold, she knows what she wants and she will do whatever she has to to get it. She is beautiful and tough and at times, I just wanted to jump into the story and throw some punches and kicks to help her out…not that she needed any help! And then there were two….Captain Chaol Westfall, who sees Celaena every day and trains her and his friend and future king, Prince Dorian. I really like both of these guys and it wasn’t a case of good guy/bad guy…they are both good guys. While I wouldn’t say there wasn’t really much romance in this story there was certainly lots going on with Celaena’s developing relationships with both of these guys. And for me…sorry Prince Dorian but I hope that Chaol comes out being ‘the one’ in the next book!
So, the setting was great, I love a good royal court with castle and guards and stone stairways. There were big dresses and dances which mixed in nicely with the fighting and training and killing. I was totally transported into this world and as I said at the start, it has taken me a week to even feel like reading another book. And now the wait begins…book two come forth soon…..Loved it!!!!
