Nevernight (The Nevernight Chronicle, #1)Nevernight by Jay Kristoff
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This book was so, so good. I started slowly, getting used to the style of writing and the characters and then from about page 60 I was totally hooked.
Mia Corvette was ten years old when her father was killed in front of her, and her mother and young brother were taken away and left to rot in the cells. Mia, also on her way to certain death escaped, with the help of Mr Kindly, a not-cat made of shadows, who not only eats Mia’s fear and is with her all of the time, but also provides an equal amount of wit and sarcastic comments.
I love Mia, she reminds me of a Quentin Tarantino character who will not hesitate to end someone’s life if that is what is needed. As the story moves along you get to understand her and I was in full support of her revenge on her father’s killers.
At age 16 Mia is heading off to try to get accepted into The Red Church, a school that trains assassins, and early on she meets Tric, another wannabe assassin who I found to be a bit of the strong silent type, although someone who is Mia’s match in word play. They worked really well together and while there were not a lot of sweet, tender moments……. there was plenty of hot, sexy times!
Other things that I loved about this book:
– all of the characters. There wasn’t a character I didn’t like and it was so much fun finding out what each of them were up to – Jessamine, Ash, Hush, Naev.
– the footnotes. There were plenty of footnotes throughout the story which I loved…sometimes I would skip them and go back when I got to the end of the chapter, and other times I read them straight away. They added detail, as well as fun to the story
– Did I mention I loved Mr Kindly. I have started looking in the shadows when I am alone to see if there is any chance there could be a Mr Kindly waiting patiently for me.
– The language. I really enjoyed the language, not only the swear words (there were lots!) but just the way that the characters talked, there was more than once that I was laughing and imagining myself walking through the corridors of The Red Church along with the other acolytes and practising my assassin skills.
I love this book so much that I have bought an Australian edition, but also a US version and a UK version, just because I realised that I really, really needed to have the different covers and the sprayed edges version.

Never Flinch.
Never Fear.
Never Forget.

Heir of Fire (Throne of Glass, #3)Heir of Fire by Sarah J. Maas
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

OMG. This book was amazing and I am going through a roller coaster of emotions right now!

Updated.
I really loved the first two books in this series, but this one, I absolutely, without a doubt, can claim as one of my best books for 2014.
*spoilers*
I didn’t know what to expect with Celaena leaving at the beginning of the book, I had the thought, ‘what kind of story can it be without Dorian and Chaol’, but, OMG what a story it was. Dorian and Chaol still played a role in the story – and I loved the introduction of the new characters who interacted with them (but that ending – brutal).
There was a fair amount of focus on the witches and their war games and at the beginning I wasn’t quite interested in this part of the story but as soon as the Wyverns were on the scene, I got very interested. While the witches are evil, unfeeling, soulless creatures, I have this small hope that Manon, one of the key witches, ends up being a hero in the next book!
And then moving onto the main story of Celaena, taken to her Aunt Maeve looking for answers, and then having to learn how to use her magic before she can get the answers. And Rowan, just Rowan….. Rowan, who has to train her. Watching Celaena and Rowan’s relationship develop was fantastic. It was not about swoony-times but about friendship and trust and allowing yourself to be vulnerable…. and also about using your fighting skills and magic to kick some evil monster butt.
This book held the answers to so many questions, about Celaena and her past, about the King of Adarlan, about the fey, and even now, reading the last sentence of the book, it gives me tingles.

Fire (Graceling Realm, #2)Fire by Kristin Cashore
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

That was quite a journey. At first I thought Fire was very similar to Katsa from Graceling, but she was actually very different. A beautiful monster who could hear people’s thoughts and also, get inside their heads and change their thoughts. I found the first half of the book tense, not many people liked Fire and I kept on waiting for the attacks. The royal family was great – filled with a variety of characters and the brooding Brigan was instantly my favourite.
The description of The Dells, the colours of the country side, the flowers and trees, the buildings and the colourful monsters was fantastic, I so wanted to go there, and watching the characters develop their relationships was very satisfying. And then, a terrible thing happened. Without going into detail, watching Fire grieve was quite difficult. It was difficult watching her grieve but then even more difficult watching her feeling so sorry for herself.
I really like the ending and felt that it tied off a few loose ends…. Although there are still a few loose ends hanging out there….. Glad I have read Graceling, and now just have to read Bitterblue.

Graceling (Graceling Realm, #1)Graceling by Kristin Cashore
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I originally read this one a few years ago and was wanting to read ‘Fire’ and ‘Bitterblue’ and so decided to read this again to set the scene. And set the scene it did. I remembered about half of the story and remembered that it had all of the things I love – kick ass girls, swords and daggers, magic, surviving the elements while the evil villain is chasing you down…. and a bit of swoon.

Graceling was all this and so much more. I love the characters – Bitterblue is such a sweet yet strong little girl, Po is intelligent, brave and knows how to smile and then there is Katsa – so strong and fearless, confident and smart and yet when she breaks, you see just how vulnerable she can be. She was a fantastic character who I immediately connected with. The adventures and travels that she ends up on are full of interesting, scary, beautiful and heart-racing people and places and you can’t help but to hold your breath to find out what exactly is going to happen on the next page.

Poison Study (Study, #1)Poison Study by Maria V. Snyder
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This was a great read! The story reminded me of Obernewtyn, which I just read, and also Throne of glass – book books that I loved. Yelena, who had been spending her time in a prison cell for murder (totally justified murder that is) is picked as the official food taster for the current Commander of the lands. She has to learn what different poisons taste like in order to identify them in the Commanders food. Throw in Valek, who is teaching her about the poisons along with driving her crazy with his rude comments (yeah…. You know there is going to be some swoon happening there!!) and a cast of characters from Cook to seamstress, to medic, to guards, all living in a mixed up castle, along with a number of choices for who the evil bad guy/girl really is and you have yourself a good story!
I really liked Yelena and I liked watching her get to know her place in the castle and also grow more confident in her skills and abilities. Valek was a strong character who I could just tell was a big softie and the evil baddies, were definitely evil. Lots of action and adventure with swordplay and fighting and a little bit of swoon as well. I found the writing just flowed and right now I really just want to get the second book in the series so I can stay in this world for a little but longer.
