The Fiery Heart (Bloodlines, #4)The Fiery Heart by Richelle Mead
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Sydney and Adrian…Adrian and Sydney. I generally do like switching point of views in books and this was no exception. In the beginning (VA days) I didn’t warm to Sydney but this series has totally turned me. I am now a big fan. And while I was always an Adrian fan, this series has just made me love him even more. I just can’t get enough of him and Sydney!!
This book has been my fave in this series, along with all of the Adrian and Sydney, we also got to see all of the regulars…. Jill and Eddie, Angeline and Trey were back, Mrs Trewinger and even some appearances of the old VA gang. Sydney’s alchemist sister Zoe is a large player in this story and I am holding out some hope for her to do something special in the next book.
The thrills and adventure were there, the mystery and intrigue had its place and there was also the fun and good times. And did I mention I love Adrian and Sydney.
Oh sigh…… now it is over again, time to go back to waiting for the next book.

The Golden Lily (Bloodlines, #2)The Golden Lily by Richelle Mead
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Updated, 22/6/2012
Well damn, damn, damn…I just can’t cope with endings like that one! The second book in the Bloodlines series did not disappoint. The characters I love are all back…Eddie, Jill, Sydney and Adrian (of course). There are some support roles from characters from VA including Dimitri and Sonya and everything just fits in nicely. When the story started I was asking myself why I had thought that I liked Sydney from the first book. She was prickly, super organised, not much fun…I couldn’t work it out. But the same thing happened in this book as it did in the first, she just grew on me and I fell in love with her again. I always liked Rose from VA – her boldness and brashness, saying whatever she thought and also her kick ass fighting skills. In The Golden Lily, Sydney shows us what she is made of. She is super smart, loves research and information (that must be the librarian in me coming out!!) and she takes control of situations without even breaking a sweat. Plus she has a soft spot for Adrian.
I must admit, the first half of the book I was wishing it would hurry up and get a bit more of Adrian in the story but by halfway I was totally hooked on the story – there are lots of little bits and pieces going on and I was trying to pick up on clues about who might be part of the ‘vampire hunters’ and were the alchemists involved and just who is this Marcus character – hope he makes an appearance in book three!! The last 100 pages just flew by and I loved the action scenes, my eyes were tearing across the pages as I was holding my breath to see what would happen.
And if I haven’t made myself clear, I am an Adrian fan. a BIG Adrian fan. Any scene that included Adrian and Sydney was just delicious to read and some of those scenes..well….they got my heart pounding.
Bring on Book Three!!

18/6/2012 Sorry to the other book I am reading.. But…. This one has Adrian. That says it all really!

The Immortal Rules (Blood of Eden, #1)The Immortal Rules by Julie Kagawa
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This one ended up being not at all what I was expecting, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing. I am a big fan of the Iron Fey series, but this was nothing like the Iron Fey! I knew it was a vampire book and in this story the vampires are the leaders and humans are a source of blood, except for the humans who don’t want to give blood – these humans are the scavengers, just trying to survive. The main character, Allie, is a scavenger who turns into a vampire. I guess I was expecting a bit of swoon and the romantic side of vampires, you know the sparkle-in-the-sun side and they don’t really want to kill people. This book was nothing like that. It was gritty and tough and dirty. There were almost two stories, the first one being Allie before she was a vampire and the second one being Allie after she was a vampire. The first half was a bit slow going but then it changed into a page turner can’t-wait-to-get-to-the-end. There was a lot of action, the characters were well developed and there was a little bit of swoon. One thing that really stands out for me is the way that Julie Kagawa writes… I was totally taken into the world, I could smell the smells, taste the tastes and feel what the characters were feeling… When Allie was going through the ‘hunger’, I could almost feel the same feelings (though maybe for hot chocolate, not human blood!). Allie was a great main character – tough, sweet, a bit witty and loyal..yes I have a small crush on her. I am looking forward to seeing her relationship with Zeke develop in the second book.
One thing I wasn’t expecting, there were a lot of deaths, a lot of bloody deaths and the one thing that made me slightly nervous as I sat in the dark reading.. *whispers* , the rabids…….. They still make me a bit nervous!
Another great series from Julie Kagawa.
Thanks to NetGalley for the book.

Bloodlines by Richelle Mead

BloodlinesBloodlines by Richelle Mead
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I do so like Richelle Mead’s writing – everything is really good. Characters, plot, action, intrigue..it all just works. I have to say, I was never a big fan of Sydney in the Vampire Academy novels and I wasn’t really all that enthused to read this one, but now after reading it, I have changed my tune. I am still a ‘Rose’ fan, but Sydney has certainly grown on me, and while some of her methods of getting to the answer, and getting the job done seem slightly pedantic, I can now see that she does actually have some spunk (stealing the line from Adrian here!). And talking about Adrian, he was the main reason I thought I would enjoy the book because I always was an Adrian fan and I was glad to get to see him a bit more in Bloodlines. He is good for a laugh, good to hang out with, and easy on the eyes..but we get to see a slightly more deeper side of him in this story. And I have to say, that last page, that last paragraph, that last line….. my heart was in my mouth and I am now desperate to get my hands on a copy of the next book in the series. Seriously, what an awesome way to end a story!

In short – great, fun, easy read with characters that we know and love…or don’t love but grow to love!

Supernatural Devices (Steampunk Scarlett, #1)Supernatural Devices by Kailin Gow
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

This book was definitely a bit of fun!! 17 year old Scarlett, who travels around with her archaeologist parents, is suddenly called to return to London to help a family friend, a Mr Sherlock Holmes! She returns to London, very happily, and then the rest of the book is one small adventure or mishap after the other. We don’t actually get to meet Mr Holmes but we do find out that Scarlett has a special ability, to see paranormal activity….whether that be vampires, or the Fey, Or even the Romanian gypsies….all of which make their appearances in the story. Scarlett is an independent girl, quite capable of looking after herself and can quite often be found running around the streets of London, still in her traveling outfit, chasing after girls with stolen rings or fighting off a vampire attack. She also has a variety of males who show up in the story, all who seem to be very good at kissing! I am not too sure what part the ‘Steampunk’ (from the title) has to play in the story but I expect it will be more dominant in the next book in the series. At one point in the story Scarlett claims something to be ‘very fantastical, even for me’ and this is what you should expect if you want to read this book. Every few pages there is another twist or turn and you have to let your imagination take over when reading the book and try not to question the likelihood of these events actually happening! Wile I didn’t really connect with any of the characters, it was still a fun, short read. Book received from NetGalley.

Darkness Becomes Her (Gods & Monsters, #1)Darkness Becomes Her by Kelly Keaton
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This wasn’t what I expected. At all. After the first 10 pages or so…. I.could.not.put.this.book.down.

It was like ….Ari is this pretty kick ass kind of chick (foster parents are bounty hunters and taught her to look after herself) and she is heading off to find information about her mother. She finds out she was in a mental hospital, then finds a letter from her mum telling her to RUN and so Ari tries to leave but ends killing a warrior type dude..who ends up vanishing into dust. I asked myself what is going on here. Kept reading and Ari (who I totally have a crush on) is picked up by a 12 year old mail girl and taken to New 2, which it turns out to be New Orleans which is no longer part of the US and is instead owned by 9 families…there were severe storms, cyclones, floods that devastated NEw Orleans and the government decided it was better not to rebuild the city. I was trying to work out what year this was supposed to be and later in the book found out it was 2026. Anyway, back to New 2. There was a little bit of voodoo but then this motley Crüe of misfits that Ari ends up staying with….well I want to invite them all to live with me, especially Violet with her little pet alligator. Each of these characters has some sort of ‘weirdness’ whether it is lighting fires with their fingers or hypnotizing people. And then it turns out the 9 families that run the town are made up of witches, vampires and shapeshifters. So I was turning every page quicker and quicker, getting totally caught up in this world, wanting to find out what was going to happen next. And of course the swoon worthy kisses between Sebastian and Ari were certainly helping me enjoy the story (although I now know the meaning of insta-love… They had only known each other for a short while and didn’t really seem to be friends before all of a sudden they were sharing steamy kisses…but it was still all good!).

And so here I was, loving this book, the writing style and the characters had totally pulled me in, there was voodoo, witches, vampires, mardi gras, a little girl named violet who were masks and had a pet alligator and some swoon…. What more could I want….. And then there was some Greek mythology thrown in to the mix!! OMG… It was a smorgasbord of things I love in a story, and it was done well. Not once did I feel like there were too many things going on, the plot was interesting and intriguing and each of the characters stood out with their own personalities.

*sighs* now I am going to look up book two to see if it has been published… Because I want this story to keep going!

Blood Feud (Drake Chronicles, #2)Blood Feud by Alyxandra Harvey
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

The Drake Chronicles are a great read…. Really, this is only my second one but it was fun and exciting and had just the right amount of swoon. For me, it was the kind of book that I could pick up and get lost in for a few hours and it easily satisfied my need for a bit of action, a few smiles here and there and some literary eye candy. Imagine a family of vampires, with seven brothers, all drop dead vampire gorgeous!!

The first book was mainly about Nick, this one was Logan….I am looking forward to book three, I wonder which brother will be featured in that one?
